What you CAN'T do in Budapest this winter

Budapest is a great city that offers a lot to its visitors but this year there are certain things that you won't be able to do.

You might wonder if the Budapest baths are open in the winter if the bars and clubs are open - these are all common question I hear from people planning a trip to Budapest. Given the fact that we live in a world with a lot of uncertainty the short answer is we don't know. BUT there are some other things that you definitely will leave Budapest without doing... Here are a couple of them:

You won't be able to walk or drive through Chain Bridge...

Unfortunately the beautiful Chain Bridge is under construction and it will take at least a couple of more years. Till then we won't be able to have this unique experience of walking between two parts of the city, at least not via Chain Bridge. If you want to be updated about when Chain Bridge will be open again, then here is a detailed link for more information.

You won't be able to see all of Buda Castle...

When I was writing this I started thinking and I realised I don't know when Buda Castle was built. Shame! I had to google it and according to Wikipedia, Buda Castle (Hungarian: Budavári Palota, German: Burgpalast) is the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. It was first completed in 1265, but the massive Baroque palace today occupying most of the site was built between 1749 and 1769.

So old Buda Castle is getting ready for a beautiful and majestic reconstruction hence some sectors are closed at the moment. The walk between Fisherman's Bastion and the Palace is through a narrow pass with barriers. I see it everyday and as I see it will look just amazing when it is done! Till then though, you won't be able to see the whole castle area.

Apart from these two major restrictions, the traffic is a big problem in Budapest city center. Especially during the peak hours I suggest avoiding any travel in the city. When I have to go for a photoshoot in the morning I double the commute time to be sure I get to my session in time. It is a great city to walk around without any transportation. You can fill yourself with joyful sights without any transportation. That's a good workout too!

Chain Bridge may be closed but Liberty Bridge is definitely open. I had a very warm family photoshoot there last week. If you want to check it, here is the link to the online gallery.
